Are you feeling weary to the point you’re too tired to get out of bed?

Updated: May 25, 2021

Maybe you’re experiencing depression fatigue.

Waking up and getting out of my bed sounds like an exhausting thing to do already for me, so what more will doing household chores, finishing school activities, or exercising make me feel?

Tiredness, weariness, lethargy, or exhaustion are all terms used to denote a lack of energy. It may be accompanied by depression, apathy, or a lack of motivation. Inadequate sleep, overexertion, overworking, stress, lack of exercise, or boredom can all cause a lack of energy. Lack of energy is frequently resolved with rest, appropriate sleep, stress management, and appropriate diet when it is part of a natural reaction.

Depression causes fatigue through affecting neurotransmitters. Changes in brain neurotransmitters such as dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin are thought to be linked to depression. "These neurotransmitters regulate energy levels, sleep, hunger, motivation, and pleasure," Ricke explains.

According to Harvard Health Publishing, depression is a complex disease with many possible and interlinked causes, including genetics, medical conditions, stressful life events, and brain chemistry. And it can be challenging to tell the difference between everyday tiredness and depression-related fatigue.

"Fatigue and depression can look quite similar," says Alex Dimitriu, MD, psychiatrist and sleep medicine expert, and founder of Menlo Park Psychiatry & Sleep Medicine.

Here are tips on how to fight depression fatigue:

-Talk with your doctor. Your doctor will want to make sure your fatigue is not caused by another medical condition or the medication used to treat it.

-Get moving. Tiredness or fatigue may be people’s go-to excuse for not exercising. But exercise has actually been found to increase your energy levels.

-Eat healthy. Adopting a healthy your diet may help us to recharge and feel more energy.

-Get a decent amount of sleep. Sleep hygiene is another important part of managing fatigue when you have depression.
